April 2016 [webmasterworld.com] was by far the worst month in my Adsense history, since the beginning.
Low payment (CPC), but now they removed the "Nessie arrows" and CTR took another dive.

I believed that it cannot get any worse, but I was wrong.

So, let's hope we will see some improvements/communications about this dire situation in May 2016.

P.S. 30 of April and 1st of May are holidays in many parts of the world...

I doubt the change to responsive units is going to make a big difference. I am using responsive ad-units exclusively, the issue is not the ad units it is the users, mobile users tend to click on ads much less. I am trying out the new page-level "vignette" ad units but I have seen any difference thus far.

Ironside: I've tried both under the first paragraph, and responsive seems to do slightly better.

Yesterday saw a bit of a surge in EPC and RPM. Still only 80% of Nov-Dec 2015 levels but it was still welcome. Let's hope it continues for a few days.

I absolutely detest mobile phones. Because I am a wheelchair user and drive a van I thought it would be a good idea to buy myself an iPhone 6 last year in case of emergencies, however it's sat on the side for 99% of the time collecting dust because I've just never think to take it with me anywhere. I hate them even more now because I blame them for my massive drop in earnings.

More than 50% of the people who use my website do so from a mobile device. The only way I am going to make any decent money is to find that one ad or layout that works. Media.net on the other hand has actually improved. Most of the money comes from a 600 x 250 units placed at the very end of the content, plus a 160 x 600 skyscraper unit placed in the left-hand column. So it's funny how media.net is improving whereas Google AdSense is just dying a death right in front of my eyes.

the issue is not the ad units it is the users, mobile users tend to click on ads much less.

Clicks are only part of the story. Cost per click is an issue, too. So are other types of bids. (On our site, which gets most of its revenue from desktop traffic, CPM bids generate quite a bit more income than CPC bids do. Are many CPM advertisers paying high bids for mobile impressions? Probably not, at least in my niche.)

Advertisers can also (very easily) set a percent reduction or increase for mobile traffic bids. For example if I'm bidding $5 per click for desktop users, I might reduce the bid by 25% (or more) for mobile users, depending on how likely I think that traffic is to convert. So there's that.

Responsive is good, but it's not the end all be all for publishers. All my responsive layouts ended up with the sidebar ads way down below the fold, so my dev came up with a way to inject them into the third or fourth scroll on a smartphone, instead of down at the bottom. (Don't ask me how, it's above my coding level) I'm hoping that will help a little bit.

God knows what is happening today, so far I've had 10 clicks for 95p, absolutely ridiculous!

That then all of a sudden I get one click on my 160 x 600 skyscraper which earns me £1.41 p :-). Be nice if I could get 20 of these in a day

Try 5 clicks and 35p!

I am now up to £2.38 p with 12 clicks. So skyscraper unit is still paying fairly good money, it's just a shame that I only get the odd good payment from it. I suppose it depends on who is looking at it and what ads are being displayed for them.

Does anyone use the new mobile ads? If I add a 320 x 100 ad unit to my website, well it's only display on a mobile device, or will I still be able to see it on my desktop computer?

You can see mobile ads on your desktop PC. For example say you place a 320x100 on your website, it will show on the desktop site and on mobile, only you can make the rules of whether it shows only on a mobile or not. Nothing to do with what Google names ads, they are just saying this one is good on a mobile. It's like if I place a 250x250 normal ad on my website this still shows when I look on a mobile phone, it's up to me to set on my own site whether I have it not show on mobile or on both etc.

AdSense went down for a time today; kept telling me there was no account associated with my email address. Thanks for that, G.

I would say the best thing to do is stick a responsive ad at the header of your site. This way you will get larger adsense ad on desktop and they will place the relevant sized ad for whatever mobile screen / tablet your visitor has...

Can anybody see the mobile banner embedded in the first paragraph of text on this page? I don't know whether it's just me that can't see. I've checked the code and everything looks okay.

@Ironside I see an ad at the beginning of the first paragraph, at the end of your text and a link ad top left sidebar. But I can see the same ads when I look at it on my laptop.

Yeah there is an ad which which shows on mobile between the post title Do Oscar Fish Play with Toys? and the paragraph ;) This ad only shows on my mobile, not my desktop.
If I was you I would remove the sponsored ads at top of mobile, need to scroll quite a bit to just get to the content.

The new Vignette ads are working quite well. Anchor ads are a different story.

Vignette ads

I'm not clear on these. Are they

page1.htm > exit site> vignette ad
or
page1.htm > vignette ad > page2.htm > page3.htm > vignette ad > etc ?
.

The latter, but I've never seen more than one served during a single visit (and I've been trying to get more than one) plus the "close ad" X mark is quite prominent. They're doing pretty well for me; there's not a lot of them being served but the EPC is near a buck a pop.

Just a quick update!

I have sent multiple emails to YouTube support to try and see if I can get a sensible explanation from them.

YouTube does allow for Adsense related queries, though the last time around they sent me over to Adsense who offered no response.

Hopefully this time they will at least make an effort to do their job and offer some kind of information as to what is taking place!

Also, my RPM has completely nose dived.....low number of clicks(per page views) + low CPC

I will need to get somewhere between 3 to 5 times as many views as I had originally calculated last year, if I wish to stay on track and reach my goals, and that increase must be ongoing.

Hi!

Does anyone have recent news on the missing Arrows or things you have done to get them back? Apparently it has affected a small number of publishers.

Tried everything so far and no luck, even support and rep approved changes, still no arrows after a few weeks now.

Just curious how many (if any) here at WW have them or don't have them back yet?

Thanks for any insight!

@adchat - i have been tracking this issue quite closely on behalf of a number of sites.

Many people who lost their arrows in the initial batch of sites got them back within a week, however many of these subsequently lost them again. The larger group of sites lost their arrows for nearly a month, most of these that I track now have their arrows back again. This month new previously unaffected sites have been loosing their arrows.

It looks like its something thats here to stay with google randomly removing nessie where it feels that you have received too many 'accidental' clicks. The various suggestions regarding getting them back possibly help - but so far it seems really random.

Seeing "stacked" ads in my vertical blocks today - first time I've ever noticed / seen them. Two showing in a 300x600 block. Both have arrows.

Something very strange about nessie arrows on my sites.
I cannot see any arrow, my ctr and payment is a joke, but the colleague from the other office can see arrows on my site! We have the same internet connection, same IP!

Red arrow time. Oops, I mean red herring time. Tail chasing, I'm over it.

Up 223% from the same day a week ago. I need it to hit around a 1000%+ (which I have seen btw) to get back to respectable earnings.
