Yesterday I make less than $10 on 20 clicks
I wouldn't complain. With by average CPC, I would be lucky to get $2 with 20 clicks - probably a lot less.
Links unit has increased the overall CTR to the highest the site has ever had, but the CPC from these link units are 50-70% lower than the standard ads
99% of my clicks come from responsive link ad units. I also use a responsive ad unit, but very rarely get clicks. And yes, although CTR is good with the link ad units, CPC is extremely low. On one particular (quite popular) page, clicks from the responsive link ad are always $0.00. Last week I got two responsive link ad clicks in close succession on this page for a grand total of $0.00. On other pages, $0.01 and slightly above is normal. On several days recently my average CPC has been 4.5p. Even with 20 clicks it still fails to reach a quid. This is quite depressing, as well as demotivating.
I remember reading somewhere (probably in these forums) how playing around with the Ad balance can get rid of a lot of low paying clicks. I've been experimenting with different settings, but no luck yet.
I don't know why I still bother. I removed Adsense for a couple of years when my affiliate links were doing well because Adsense earnings were so low. My site is mainly travel related and a few years ago I was doing great with a hotel booking affiliate. My affiliate earnings were far higher than Adsense had ever been. However, that died eventually and when it did I replaced Adsense. Earnings are still low, but it's better than nothing I guess, and there remains the eternal hope that one day, maybe, Adsense will begin to return to how it used to be. Yes, delusional, I know. Also, Google throws in a good day every now and again simply to give me a false sense of optimism.
One day, I will actually start to do what I've been intending doing for ages - forget Adsense altogether and start writing some eBooks. Inertia can be a problem at times, but the worse Adsense becomes the more motivation I have to try something different. For that I should thank G.
