Big publishers are now going after the crumbs that small publishers used to survive on.

This

I won't name names but my niche got stomped hard when a major Wall st listed corporation moved content via mass 301 from several of their best known properties over to non-descript sites. The pages are all pretty short, most 3-4 paragraphs, but they are hyper focused on sets of 2-3 keywords with a hyper accurate keyword including title for each page.

The sites look like MFA and use the forever scrolling setup but they definitely targeted the scraps, searches with less than 100 per day, and won them by the multi-hundreds of thousands per site. Their backlink profiles are off the charts. Launched and acquired 600,000+ backlinks immediately, it seems 301's from these major sites carry over to the new domains.

Everyone linking to the old site thinking it was an authority source is now pointing to these MFA looking sites due to the mass 301. In many cases the major sites rank 1-2 as they previously had multiple pages fighting for the same keywords.

On the bright side, if you take notice and research the new sites a bit, they kinda wrote a road-map for you to take these back since you'd be hard pressed to make a lower quality page.

Couldn't Covid19 actually be "good" for online advertising?

People at home, in front of their devices for longer periods of time, trying to pass the time away - browsing, reading, playing.

I mean sure no one's going to run out and buy a car but pretty much anything else will be had through an internet purchase during these dark times.

@CommandDork

What do your numbers show? Is coronavirus good or bad for you? My income is down 30% from last week. Traffic is only down 5%.

So far, knock on wood, the virus is not affecting me negatively, but my sites have nothing to do with event gatherings, travel, education, etc. Traffic is up and so is the EPC. Will it last as this crisis drags on? Who knows. The world seems upside down right now.

Decent uptick the past couple of days over here. Today's starting pretty lousy, though, but I've learned to wait until evening before deciding whether or not the day's a bust. I'm just wondering where we'll be a month from now.

The ad fill rate for my non-AdSense suppliers has gone from 31% down to 17% in 5 days.

I'm looking at an all-time low in revenue today. Been using adsense since 2003.

My plan is to eliminate it altogether within 2 months anyhow, so I shouldn't really care. Just want my last payment on March 21 and then they can KMA forever.

Im having a surprisingly good (read: not bad) Sunday, first decent day since weeks. CPC and CTR of all western countries ok. March earnings still a whopping 37% down compared to last year.

Overall EPCs will probably dip while this crisis lasts, but this is also an election year. Political campaigns will be spending big time soon. That should help bring EPCs back up, at least in the US.

Soon? I'm already whacking political ads fast and furious, they are not well received in my niche.

Most are civil enough that I don't have to block the category though, for now.

They might not fit your niche, but the fact that there are so many of them means they are winning the auctions and supporting the epc you have now. If you whack them all, there is less competition and lower bidders will win the auctions, resulting in a lower epc.

Stock markets down, gold down, petrol down, web traffic down, ad revenue down. Everything is going down these days except the number of new coronavirus cases :)

Web traffic is actually up in most cases and there are now fears that the internet will not be able to handle all the extra traffic from people working from home, kids’ online learning, etc.

Strong USD compared to almost any other currency, so if you get paid in another currency you are likely benefiting.

Judging by other comments above, here is a lot of variation in traffic and RPM, depending on the niche you are operating in. We are in education and are seeing a large decrease in both traffic and RPM, despite the fact that March is usually a good month for us. We'll see how things will turn out once the initial turmoil is over.

@kireb which niche are you into? And what's your RPM and CPC as of yesterday bro and if this is true about increase in AdSense earnings then we are good to go. thanks waiting for your response.

Hi,
I have yesterday a drop by 60% for revenue and 50% for page impressions and only 2% drops at page-views...
is there's a problem or just Covid19? my website field is (story, novel short-story...)

last update of my website was about 10 days ago (I just add some facebook page like plugin).

thanks in advance

~ -30% drop yesterday for traffic. Revenue is not that bad, strange thing but once page views went down RPM went up. So its kind of compensate traffic lost, i guess its because of page views shortage (more page views - less price)

@web01 Im in the primary education niche. Free learning materials and books. Numbers seem too good to be true since Sunday. Experienced huge decline during the first 2,weeks of March (-37% y-t-y), up untill Sunday that is. Either there will be a huge clawback at end of month, or homeschooling and online educational companies are paying premiums cause of Covid. Hope the latter of course.
