This looks as if there's a shift back to mobile technology and search.

It does, indeed look as if it's one of the goals. I suspect mobile is the target with this acquisition, enabling better voice search, from whatever index is being used.

We really could use another search player.

I really don't think you could describe the present state of search more accurately.

A moot point as long as the default search on android devices can not be changed.
