Yahoo to Invest $100 million in [tech.yahoo.com]New Data Center

Yahoo Inc. says it will invest at least $100 million in a new data center in Nebraska, creating at least 100 jobs.
The announcement Friday from the Internet company and Nebraska officials comes just days after Yahoo said it would cut at least 1,500 workers as it deals with the economic downturn.

I live here in Omaha. It is a nice place to live. It is becoming a very popular place to have a tech company. The new Yahoo Facility is located in La Vista. It is about 2 miles from the North American Operations faciility for PayPal and about 20 minutes west of Google's recently established facility. Both Google and Yahoo are building Server Farms.

All the major players are building huge datacenters now. Makes you wonder.

Omaha is a great place because of the fiber backbone that goes right through it. Besides, when the governor shows up to the press conference in a purple shirt and purple shoes, it must be a pretty friendly place for Yahoo to do business :) Since it's only three hours from me, I intend on visiting the new Customer Care facility if at all possible. Maybe they can 'splain a few things.

We do get a fair amount of snow here in Nebraska. We are mainly at the top of Tornado Alley. I have lived here for 31 years, and have not physically seen a Tornado. Sure there are a lot of warnings, but very few become something of significance. The PayPal Center and many other businesses around this area were hit by a very bad set of Severe Storms this past spring. They happened in about a span of 7-10 days. About 3 Tornados came through; that's what was explained, but we did not have any eyewitnesses, just the result.

I just watched the video of the Nebraska/Yahoo press conference, and they had surprised the viewers with an add on to the announcement for the data center; They announced they are building a customer care center as well in West Omaha.
