Upgrade old drive boxes?

Due to the nature of my work I have some 90 old hard disk boxes (max around 7 years old) a lot with 1tb drives.

I have been thinking of swapping out the 1tbs and replacing them with higher capacity drives. However I understand the box controllers etc won’t accept drive beyond a certain capacity.

How can I find this out? I would have liked to reuse these old external drive cases...

I received errors trying to clone a new drive with an older external drive.

I researched this at the time but can't remember the exact issue that causes this problem.

Drop one in and see what happens.

Look up the controller ... there's a part number stamped on it somewhere. Or research the mfgr of the box..

As I recall, it has to do with the drive boxes not being able to handle anything larger than (I think) 2gb. I found the answer within the context of cloning software. The cloning software wasn't working and that's how I figured out it was the external drive box.

Someone else in this thread mentioned controllers and that might be the issue.

Thanks for all the replies. I have swapped the old ones with newer 2tb drives and it’s all working fine. Hosting to donate tech 1tb drives to some rural school computer lab...
