So generally I have sites on one server. Then I have them backed on a separate server. (that version is usually out of date but good enough in a pinch) So if the main server goes down I can change my dns info in cloudflare and immediately get sites back up instead of waiting for the main server to sort out issues.

My question is their a way to do this automatically with cloudflare. I happened to catch it today. But if the main server went down at 4am I would not notice and change the dns until I woke up the next day.

I have an email I am sent if the site goes down but again that doesn't help if I am sleeping.

Cloudflare provides this functionality with the Load Balancer option which is available for all customers since May this year.

On my main sites I have setup failover configuration with my DNS provider which provides an average delay of 60 seconds before the failover takes place, and an additional maximum TTL time of 300 seconds before the DNS record is refreshed at the client's side. According to their documentation, Cloudflare should be faster in detecting and switching traffic for proxied traffic. Non proxied traffic is switched by changing the DNS records which suffers from TTL refresh delays.
