According to reports, some HP laptops have been shipped with a built in keylogger sine 2015.
[thenextweb.com...]

The log file is stored locally on the user’s system at C:\Users\Public\MicTray.log. However, it's deleted each time you log out.

Of course, if you're backing up you may have a record of the MicTray.log file.

Here's a list of the machines affected.

One has to wonder at some of these tings. I can see, from a testing point of view, that keylogging would be useful to figure things out (as a programmer), but can't conceive of any reason for it to exist on a consumer level production machine. Is this nefarious or merely human stupidity at work?

Human stupidity, tangor. I suspect it was meant to have been removed before it went to production.

HP are now saying they are to issue a fix.
