nope not at all, but i am building systems every single day and i've seen every chip you can think of. The intel mobile stuff is fine, but core i5 is as much as you should pay for on the mobile side.. the performance bump from a mobile i5 to a mobile i7 vs what they charge... no dice.

On the desktop / gaming side, zero reason to choose intel. you can get similar performance and save mounds of cash. Also AMD is giving you great coolers with new chips... wraith, wraith spire, they are like 50.00 coolers free. Intel you'd be lucky if they give you a cooler at all. Also all new AMD chips have unlocked multipliers, you know how much EXTRA intel charges for their K chips WOOOOO.

Ram is Ram, but graphics is something else. In some cost basis an AMD processor will need a much higher GPU than Intel, offsetting the CPU cost difference between Intel and AMD.

I quit making PCs for profit about six years ago.... the market and mark up had become so thin I could no longer afford to support the machines post sale. I built several thousand machines, about 75% were AMD. of those 3 CPU failures. On the Intel side 0 CPU failures.

"Do you want gaming experience or just need a computer to do work?" was the question, and depending on that answer I'd make a recommendation, offer some pricing, then let the customer make their choice.

For desktops, I've (almost) always used bare bones put together by a trusted shop nearby. Low price and none of the bundled bloat.

For several years in the early 2000s I went with AMD. I switched (and stayed) to Intel because of the matched motherboard kits. Intel is a bit more expensive, but they have a more reliable reputation.

not really, 2 480s crossfired are still below the price of a single 1080. oh yea AMD just dropped the 580s this week...they are making everyone happy at the moment.

benchmark numbers from some website somewhere... if you don't know anything about the new AMD chips you could, and probably are doing it wrong. Infinity fabric, ryzen chips live on fast ram, the faster the better, feed your ryzen chips the fastest you can afford. Also Sense MI smart prefetch, the CPU watches and learns. People write code, code follows logic, the chip watches and gets one step ahead of frequently executed code, you do XYZ the chip knows the next thing the code will ask for and have it ready before it even asks.

why are you buying matched kits.. you know what that is? thats called i have a bunch of mobos nobody is buying and i've got to get rid of them....so lets match them with some chips and get them out the door.

Just because I don't agree or have another opinion doesn't mean im angry. I don't care about intel, if intel started giving me awesome chips for awesome prices i'd be singing their song just as loud, but they aren't. I've also said im totally 100% fine with intel mobile products, laptop chips are fine.

At the moment AMD is constantly giving me win win win on the desktop side with both CPUs and GPUs.

You can also like intel but don't ignore facts.

I'm also giving you valuable pointers like DO NOT BUY COMBO KITS because that is the retailer just trying to move some garbage parts. You want a single stick of slow non dual channel ram, this is where they will push that junk... bad stuff.

AMD and Intel are about as quality as it gets these days. Each has strengths .... benchmarks can be impressive on both sides HOWEVER, what does seem to be missing is application, ie, how is that hardware going to be used?

World's greatest CPU and GPU means nothing to a spreadsheet pusher, or coder, or most webmasters. How much it costs does matter, particularly if you're running multiple to hundreds of systems, and again, FOR WHAT PURPOSE?

If there wasn't a market for both then one or the other would be the consumer choice and this conversation wouldn't be happening.

benchmarks can get messy, some benchmarks only single thread, some fully support multicores. I stick with www.cpubenchmark.net because they have the most exhaustive chip list i've ever seen and their numbers are a pretty good gauge of how the chip will perform. other then that i use in my hands building it and using it for the truth.

spreadsheets might seem silly but i have a friend that has to pull some banking reports for work and his spreadsheets would make any system cry lol sometimes hes gota wait 4 mins for the data to populate.

There is a little more then just market factor in play, intel does use some kinda crumby OEM tactics to promote intel based systems and make them shy away from AMD based systems.. heck 3 years ago i was getting gigabyte motherboards with an intel celeron chip baked on FOR FREE. the whole board + CPU and heat sink were 45.00. Yea i built lots of those but it was obvious intel was giving gigabyte their CPUs away for no cost. They got busted in the 90's for doing this but it now seems its happening again unchecked. The Core I branding is also doing nothing but confusing customers, they don't even know what they are buying really....but intel has done a great marketing job and now everyone just thinks in

3, 5, 7 ..and there are so many processors in each line up it will cross your eyes, did you know they have even sell dual core i5? now in each dizzying line up they have their K chips, and they are totally punching your wallet in the face with most of their desktop chips, and people hand over the cash and buy them like zombies. I deprogram these people daily, i put a system right in front of them and let them drive it... they are shocked and dumbfounded.

I just placed an order for 10 core i5 laptops, I do not hate intel, but they are using their weight to skew the market, and thats not cool which is why I mostly do not build any intel desktop products, I can get the same work done for less. The only place left was the ultra high end, yes i had to use i7s but that is no longer the case with ryzen 7, their 500.00 chip competes directly with intels 1000.00 i7. Thank god. Intel has an extremely unhealthy grip on the market, 2 years ago i was wondering if AMD would even last...and if they went away what would happen? intel already had gouging level pricing, which already showed us they do not care at all about budget minded consumers....scary times. Glad it never happened.

I thoroughly enjoy the rivalry between Intel and AMD. Why? There's that leapfrog one against the other. Intel might have the deep pockets and in some respects the better path for technology, but AMD has the guts to throw everything against the wall to achieve practical parity in benchmarks (though not always as in depth with tech) AND insert a very useful and competitive PRICE POINT.

AMD needs Intel. Intel needs AMD. One to price better, the other to just be better. And vise versa.

it used to be a back and forth each pushing one another and creating lower costs and competition but for the past 7 or so years it has not been that way at all.... intel got a little a head and just stood on AMDs throat waiting for them to die. They got ahead on chip tech and performance then gave them a double nut punch with some sleezy OEM tactics to further kill their cash flow. AMD picking up ATI has been their life saver as they've been able to keep cranking out GPU sales, and using that tech to dump into their APU line. I mean they've done a hell of a number held at gun point.

Intel's boot on AMD's throat has a benefit in the small guy doing wonders as far as consumers are concerned (price wise) but still has to catch up to the overall tech.

Again, it boils down to APPLICATION for the hardware. Most folks don't need either company's latest and greatest. Then again, there are enough foks who love to bleed on the edge of technology that there's a market for that as well.

core counts going into the sky, threads for miles, everything is still rushing right along. Intel is running into some serious headaches with their 22nm fab.

You can only get circuits so small and the are finding that limit now, so now you have to put magic into the transistor to make it be able to do more then just 2 states, so now they are doing 3 state transistors and AMD in their GPU already have FinFet 4 state transistors

That will be the future moving forward, instead of trying to get smaller make the transistors do more work, and then start stacking them.

And also back to the future with more processors per board, yes dual and quad socket boards... remember those :-)
