Lots of graphics and video production applications I can see for a machine like this... but in the desktop world, eg, many video editors use outboard drives in special housings with cooling fans built in.

Dell is selling this as the "world's thinnest and lightest workstation".

I wondered the same as well as how you can get decent battery life. That said, at some point with SSD drives and OLED screens, it should be possible to get battery life up there, but you still have hot and power hungry chips for the near future.

If you're not already designing responsive sites, better start. That kind of resolution means an awful lot of grownups will be setting their default text size to 18 points and up. (3200? Sheesh. My desktop is set to 1600-- and that is NOT the highest available number. If I could figure out how to change the iPad, I'd do it.)

lucy24, Windows users should be increasing the DPI rather than (or perhaps in addition to) the font size. Responsive doesn't necessarily work, but it helps.

Plus there's the whole issue of device pixels and CSS pixels and device width and viewport width and and and

This seems to have been solved elegantly by Apple, poorly by MS, and not at all by a lot of software vendors, but adjusting to these screens will have to happen

- at the OS level
- at the app level
- at the web design level.

All three need to come together for things to work well.

Many apps and websites are quite broken for me

im a little sick of monitors getting WIDER, and not taller.

i just dumped my 19inch LCD for a 23 inch LED and hummm its standing right next to my 17 inch LCD even steven.... blah.

Actually, a lot of people I know set up their dual monitors so one is landscape and one is portrait. If you read a lot of documents, portrait really makes more sense

That said, finding a laptop with decent resolution has always been "impossible". Alas, no more! Dell will be releasing the Precision M3800 "soon", sporting no less than 3200x1800!

Will that have an optional 54 inch screen?

I've got my laptop hooked up to a 27 monitor @ 1920 right now and I'm still hitting "ctrl +" on a lot of sites.

Speaking of large monitors ... maybe they can come up with a foldable monitor, or a flexible roll up monitor to go with a system like that.

In fairness, "ctrl +" works fine when I'm traveling with just the laptop. It's just that I'm used to have several different programs visible on the screen at once.

Two comments

1. Aspect ratio. When I plug my laptop into my old monitor, the aspect ratio is all wrong and it doesn't adapt well. So more than coming with a 54-inch screen, it needs to handle different resolutions and aspect ratios well.

2. Hitting CTRL-+ Again, on a Win machine you should be pushing up the DPI, but I'm sure you've discovered that a lot of apps don't handle this well. Though it's been available since at least Vista it isn't something developers have commonly paid attention to. MS, however, has been working hard lately to get developers to realize that with higher and higher pixel counts, it is essentially that apps be built with that in mind.

Yep, I understand that but if its not just a work machine and a do everything machine its kind of a pain. I could fit 3 20 inch normal square monitors on my desk now and it would be "wall of screen" but these new wide screen things, no way... even if, it would just be long stretch of screen. Just give me equal parts like we used to do, thats all. they are computer monitors, not TV's
