Tablet sales are starting to go through the roof. But for what I'm doing, I need a full size keyboard, and a DVD burner for backups. Can you get that in a tablet?

Tablets are aimed at consumers of content; much less so at creators of content.
Consumers don't type (much), they don't need to make backups as they store the content they create on social networks and/or in the cloud.

You can attach a keyboard and some other peripherals, I gather. Believe it or not, no matter who the target market is, people ARE using tablets to do graphic design and other work stuff. Basically, we're moving toward more digital access everywhere and away from centralized work/shop/socialize (as in, fewer things keeping us in centralized offices/meeting places), and that means smaller computers are going to be pushed to their limits and things like "Ubuntu Touch" popping up until the mini devices are truly easy to use for most things because they interact freely with any non-portable machines that must stay in use.

Just because tablet sales have taken off doesn't mean you need to go buy a tablet or that a tablet will help you do what you want. Tablets are to aid mobibility. Why do you feel you need a full size keyboard and dvd burner with a tablet?

DVD burner for backups
Sync the tablet with your desktop to have the tablet data backed up with your regular desktop backup.

if by tablet you mean, the thing sitting next to their keyboard they use to sketch designs on their desktops then sure... they've been using those things for years.
if you mean the thing you toss your kid to play angry birds on then.. um... im sorry.
