Windows 7 to Windows 8

Will my current laptop screen work?

Hi everyone.

I'm using an HP G60 series laptop that I bought about 3 years ago, and it came with Windows 7.

And I'm seeing a bunch of ads for Windows 8. Right now I'm thinking one of the major changes is that Windows 8 uses a touchscreen instead of a mouse (some people are saying that it makes the mouse obsolete).

Is a touchscreen a hardware or software thing? Or maybe both. And if I upgrade to Windows 8, will I need a new screen?

This is a question better left to Windows 8 users but I went through a fleet of Desktops and every conceivable laptop etc in a Best Buy touching the screens and none worked. I was expecting otherwise so apparently the mouse is still in vogue.

I begin tracking touch screen monitors about a year before introduction of Windows 8. Two things struck me. None of the major brands seem infatuated with the market. Plus the price points for universal adaptation seemed high especially past 21". Certainly didn’t seem to make me want to trade any of my high end monitors for.

Touch screen is hardware, so unless your laptop has a touch screen already, no show

touch is very hardware.... you have no hardware... you have no touch.

and a finger making a mouse obsolete? laughable..... I remember when mouse went from ball to laser and the precise control was KING...... but you know your big fat smooshy finger is way better right?

About half of the new laptops I see on sale in Japan now have touch screens. They even put signs on all the old non-touchscreen models. I guess they got tired of wiping down the screens of the display models every day. ;)

Even without the touchscreen, you can do a lot of Windows 8 gestures on your trackpad, assuming you have one on your laptop.

You don't need a touchscreen to run Windows 8. The purpose is Microsoft's attempt at integrating Windows on the desktop with tablets and phones, the latter of which Microsoft has virtually no market share.

If you have a touchscreen then you can use it but many question the purpose on the desktop.

After deinstalling all "Apps", getting rid of the Start Screen with the Tiles and installing "Classic Start Menu", my Windows 8 looks just like Windows 7.

You can use Windows 8 like any previous Windows version once you get rid of the "tile" and fullscreen App garbage that makes no sense at all in a Desktop/Mouse environement. And that takes about five minutes.
