Sound from speakers(headphones) and onboard sound card

I am running a WIN XP box at work, with Intel DQ965CO main board.
Sound card seems to be an IDT High Def Audio card.

I have sound coming from my speakers plugged into the rear port. But I also have sound coming from the PC itself.... sounds like from an on-board speaker.

I have tried the following.

Went into the sound card control panel. If i mute the WAVE output, it shuts off the on-board and my speakers.

Disabled the Windows Audio service. When i do that it disables everything.

Got into the BIOS and disabled the peripheral device setting for Audio. Rebooted. Doesn't seem to make a difference.

I have been researching this for hours... but nothing seems to work. Intel has also generously decided to discontinue any type of support for this model of main board.

Any ideas?

so you suddenly have sound coming from the PC speaker?!?!? haahaahahahh

start --> control panel --> sound and audio devices --> audio. what is selected as the default device for sound playback?

Look for that pc speaker device in your audio settings or device manager. How did this happen? just out of the blue?

In device manager you'll have to "show hidden devices" hunt down the PC speaker or even try something called beep.

No suddenly no... It was just the first time I needed to use sound since I got a new box... my old one crashed.

the default sound device is the sound card, IDT Audio Device.

Already tried the "beep" trick... didnt work.

Im about ready to take this box apart and open her up..

yea last resort is to actually unplug the speaker from the board :-P

its just going to be a poking and prodding thing, there is no direct cause for such things.
