securing network for small radio station

Greetings, I am now in charge of maintaining the IT for a small radio station. There are probably about 10 computers running max, maybe 6 or 7. Anyways, the previous tech had alot of his methods and one of them was using ipcop. I am not familiar with ipcop and was wondering if it is really necessary and if a normal good firewall router would suffice.

I plan to have all of the machines on their own static IP and probably use a registered domain to connect to them remotely. Or maybe zoneedit with its little ip update utility.

Im a big fan of just keeping things simple and I figure that if I know all the ips of the computers and know exactly which ports are open on my router then Im on par. Additionally I may specify in VNC to only allow certain remote IP addresses.

I would appreciate anyones suggestions or thoughts.

with a little reading ipcop shouldn't be to hard to figure out.... but a normal NAT router should be fine for just 10 nodes on a low profile network.

ditch VNC and try using a remote program called team viewer, you can set it up in dedicated mode and a 3rd party team viewer server does all the handshaking and sets up a secure connection. that way you don't have to leave ports open on your router, a quick port scan will reveal an opening that someone could try to exploit.

what routers are you familiar with? Does the network already have a switch? if so what kind....etc.

will team viewer allow me to connect when no one is there to invite me?

I am familiar with linksys, dlink and trendnet

also, i like using the old firewall sygate, any thoughts on that

yes you can set team viewer up with perm access.

trendnet and dlink have done me well with small LANs. Trendnet has some really nice low price unmanaged gigabit switches on the market right now.

I am looking at a linksys that will allow dd-wrt to be flashed. Seems like that may be a good way to go?

I looked through ipcop and it seems pretty straight forward, just seems a tiny bit unnecessary. But if ipcop does a good job maybe it would be worth keeping.

I think I just like the idea of the firewall being on the router and not having to worry about keeping an extra machine on.

I wouldn't go with any of that dd-wrt stuff at a work place.

yea i would prob ditch the ipcop box.

does this place also have a switch?

Yes there is a switch, i think a rack 16 port or maybe 24, why?

just would be a good time to go gigabit while you are revamping this stuff :-)
