High Apache CPU load

Apache is eating up CPU memory

Hello,

I have a problem with my server. The usage of CPU is very high. It vary, but up to 75% when having 100 visitors.
Both Plesk Watchdog and Health Monitoring is showing this.

# Intel® Xeon® X3440 Quadcore 64 Bit
# 8 GB DDR3-RAM
# 2x 1.000 GB SATA II-HDD
# Centos 5
# Plesk 10

Another thing is that when I run this command: netstat -n | grep :80 |wc -l it gives a number up to 900.
I dont think its a ddos, but maybe a problem with the server.

I have no idea how to solve this. please help.

I have attached a screenshot from Plesk 10 health monitoring:

As you can see Apache CPU usage is high: 55%
But the CPU Total usage is: 7.6%

Is the Apache CPU usage limited somewhere or is there any other reason for the Apache high load?

what does the detailed report say.

im not a linux guy but if apache was doing that on my windows server i'd stop the service and restart it, sometimes stuff gets sideways and needs a little slap.

can you see your network interface activity? hmm I don't like servers in far off lands, you can't get behind the controls and really figure stuff out.

Detailed report isnt detailed at all :)
It just shows some graphics.

httpd has been restarted several times, but I will do a Server software reboot later tonight.

I have solved the netstat problem by turning KeepAlive On. Now the number is below 100.

But the Apache CPU Usage is still a problem.
I am sure its a config problem, but cant figure it out and google isnt helping me at all :(

I don't see any problem. Your system load is 0.33, which is more than fine. On quad core it can go up to 4.00 without any problems and you can still have everything working fine up to 8.00-10.00 range. If you have many visitors it is normal that CPU and RAM is used.

What you fail to mention is whether there is any visible slowdown while you use the website? If there isn't any, then there is nothing you should worry about.

J_RaD -> It started when I updated to Plesk 10+ (latest version)
I am not sure if that was the problem.

mbabuskov -> There was a slight slowdown.

I changed the server OS, now running Debian instead of Centos.
Everything is running fine now.
