How Fast? Synology DS1010+ LAMP speeds

I am considering using a Synology DS1010+ as my intranet web server. I currently use a Dell DE521.

My intranet application queries a large number of records to search and filter information.

- Usage entails reading, with little writing, to MySQL.
- Data is mostly text, very few images (if any).
- There are typically 5 concurrent users.

I have "raced" these two LAMP machines:

- CentOS 5 on a Dell Dimension E521 Pentium D 3GHz + 2GB Ram using a 7,200RPM HD.
- Synology DS210+ (1.06GHz + 512MB Ram) on RAID 1 using 7,200RPM HD.

The Dell typically beats the DS210+ by about 3-5 seconds on each page load.

Do you think a Synology DS 1010+ (1.67 Dual Core + 1MB Ram) on Raid 5 would be quicker than the Dell?

I am considering replacing the aging Dell with a Synology DS1010+, but only if it can match or exceed the Dell's performance.

I can't find any specs on the dell model number you posted, and the DS1010 is just a NAS?

Should add that yes the Synology box is just a NAS with LAMP. Only about 5 concurrent users, but a large number of MySQL records that need to be read per page load (see earlier post).

Dell Dimension E521 Pentium D
are you sure the E521 is an intel chip? seems the E521 is and AMD and the E520 is the intel. THe AMD model is better then the intel but that won't matter much in this situation.
2 GB DDR2 800Mhz single channel
1 7,200 SATA 3GBs

The synology doesn't give any detailed specs but if its pushing a 1.67 dual core its not hard to guess that would be an atom processor, its running RAID 5 which will operate faster then a single SATA drive, it also has gigabit ethernet support which the dell doesn't, but that won't matter unless you are operating on a gigabit switch.

the synology sounds like its got great I/O hampered by poor processor/ram speed.

Easy choice.... DELL.
