On my main machine I noticed an unusual clicking sound coming from the computer. I left it running and removed the case side cover. I located the sound to my main HD. That hard drive always clicks once when I power on the system, but it was clicking roughly once every couple of seconds. I also noticed performance on the system had taken a real hit. My guess is the drive head is shot and flicking about trying to locate the data. Thankful my backups are 100% up to date, so loosing a drive isn't really a major issue.
Today when I powered on I got the usual one click, then it worked like always. PC speed was back to normal.
Does this mean the HD is on the verge of failure or could it be an IDE controller? As it stands all is working fine, and no evidence of any failures.
