Is there a downside to mounting a horizontal server vertically? Other than the hard drives being vertical instead of horizontal, I don't see any issue. With the state of hard drives these days, would that be an issue?

If any small heatsinks rely on orientation & convection for cooling, you could have a problem but if there's plenty of air movement, it should be ok. You should check hard disk specs but I think I'm right in saying that all hard disks made since about 1990 have been designed for use in any orientation. Mounting them vertically will help with cooling (but, bizarrely, one piece of research suggested hotter drives can be more reliable - crazy).
