It depends why it was slowing down - the reality is either it will make a dramatic improvement or no difference.

As Kaled said...but, it will always help and 1GB should be min. on anything running Win2K or above. I won't even think about less than 2GB. Easy way to check is look at swap drive access (virtual mem/page file). You may still be depending on your virtual memory for running any programs with 1GB and depends entirely on what you have loading at start-up etc.

We won't buy a computer anymore without 2gb. A few, like the server and graphics workstation we have upgraded to 3gb (the basic limit of what you can use in windoze).

If you are running Windows then I suspect you'll find it a huge difference. Of course, it's possible you won't but most probable that you will.

Okay, my RAM came today and I just installed it. All I can say is that I wish I had done this before! Before, when I opened up a bigger program, my computer would just lag and sit for at least 10 seconds. Now, all of my programs open up instantly! It's crazy!

I had open 8 programs just now, and not a single one slowed down, and they all opened up very quickly. Before, I could only open about 5 AND they all opened really slow.

This is pretty exciting! It's also cool to be able to install your own hardware!

If your motherboard supports dual-channel, you can put two pieces 512 RAM on two RAM slots and feel the speed like 2GB. But even though you put 4GB RAM, it will slow eventually. All you need to do is to optimize your PC regularly. Such as,

1) Defragmenting at least once a week.
2) Reduce the programs loaded at startup.
3) Use low memory usage antivirus ( you can see this at task manager), try different antivirus to see. I can suggest you a good one.
4) Do not install to many applications on one hard disk. For example; You could install games on D:, and other applications on C:. Data such as MP3, movies etc on E:
5) There are other things you can do. (save for next thread :p )

Is your system using the virtual memory from your hard disk? If that is the case, you might see quite a significant difference.

If not, you might not see a difference.

If you have a very low CPU speed, having more memory could be counter productive as well.

Thank you very much for all of the tips. So far, the computer is much faster with my new 512 card. Do you have a suggestion for an anti-virus software that you enjoy? The one that I found is the least slowest is Norton, which I really enjoy much better than McAfee.

Try NOD32 for AV. It's got a free trial last I looked.
