From Startup to Big-shot

I'd love to hear a story from start to finish regarding growing a backend.

Say you are running a new web startup company. Traffic is growing steadily. You are running your little site on shared hosting. Then the buzz hits, you get dugg, you get mentioned in blogs and traffic starts flooding your site. Assuming you are still working out of your own pocket, what steps to do you take (in regards to the backend servers and databases) from the beginning all the way to the top.

This hasn't happened to me, but I really would like to read a story, or know more about how the big shot web 2.0's of today managed the bumpy ride to the top.

Anyone know of any details?

You might want to read this thread [webmasterworld.com]. It is about one of the WebmasterWorld members who operates a high traffic website on a relatively small number of servers.
