Can or should I add a wireless router after a Hub

My house came wired for internet however I often like to use my laptop on my wireless router. My problem however is that all my connections terminate in a corner of my basement. Currently I use my SMC wireless router there, send a wired signal to 2 different desktops and to the bedroom when I want to plug in the laptop.
However since my router is an old B type, my signal strength even on the main floor is week. What I wanted to know is, can i use a hub, vice where my router is right now, and then plug in my router on my main floor. Will this work? Or what other ways should I go?

I use a Wireless Access Point to send the WiFi from the switch, and it works just fine. I don't know if that helps you.

I think that

1, try connect to isp broadband using router that incorporates broadband modem, not a wireless one to avoid clashing wireless signals, simple 4 port router/modem

2, run cat 5 cable from router/modem upstairs to wireless AP.

I've set it up that way before, so it ought to work, but,,,

make sure that the router/moden you use in basement does not have wireless function, or else you might get clashing signals
