The firewall built into XP only works with incoming data, so if you did have any spyware on your PC it would able to send messages back home!
ZoneAlarm works on both incoming and outgoing data and so prevents this.

I like Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall - been using it since it was just Kerio - lowest footprint and best learning mode of any software firewall and it's free.

agreed, Sunbelt Kerio is one of the best, low footprint and very good built in options like the ability to block off javascript, Vbscripts and activeX from the firewall itself.

I have used McAfee personal firewall first, but now use Kerio. McAfee software tries to think what is best and there are almost no customization options to give some programs more rights than normal or block internet access for specific programs. (i.e. outgoing traffic from installed programs on your PC that regularly check their homebase to see of new versions are available etc. I don't want software to do that on my PC, all outgoing internet traffic should be initiated by myself).
