We are currently getting a lot of oversize charges that started about a month ago.

Some of our product lines are shipped in 48x4x4 or 48x5x5 boxes, and lately, we have several that randomly get hit with a $20+ oversize handling fee, which doubles the shipping cost.

I have confirmed that UPS still rounds up on physical weight, and rounds down on dimensional weight when under decimal .5 and up to the next pound when .5 and over; and oversize due to dimensions following the rounding rule also.

It appears to be random, but the charge always occurs when UPS has a blank field for actual measured dimensions when the package is scanned by the UPS laser measuring scanner.

Is anybody else seeing this behaviour? Does the parcel get scanned for size at the local UPS warehouse, or only at a major distribution point?

All I know, it's a pain in the butt, to keep calling UPS for invoice corrections.

I would switch to FedEx for shipping, but their rates are higher, and it adds a day or two to delivery, for parcels going outside our region.

That sounds a sneaky wheeze they've discovered.

Good thing you're on-the-ball!
