"Join" Vs "Sign Up" Vs "Register" Vs "Create Account"

Anyone had to ask this question?

In particular for free online games, I am trying to decide which of those to choose as users are required to provide their info. I realise there might be a very minor difference in conversions between those links but which is the best option?

Any help appreciated.

Very good question, I've pondered this micro-issue myself and hope to learn a bit more here!

Gaming . . . are you joining as in an online group and will return for team play or just to access the games? Are there benefits beyond just accessing the games? If no to both, seems like that would eliminate join; if yes . . . ? Join might be appropriate if there are immediate benefits to "joining" that you display. Join infers a group participation.

Register may seem committal, "Now I'm registered with this organization." Create Account sounds appropriate IMO . . . but as I said, I'm on the fence on this one and all ears. :-)

What are other similar sites using?

Checks this site . . . there it is, "register" . . .

One study I saw showed good results for "Continue" - seems entirely non-threatening.

You could, and I would recommend, trying google website optimizer to test the different variations. It's a great easy to use tool.

100% agree. I often find that the winning 'call to action' is not the one my gut feeling would suggest.

It will vary wildly from site to site.

I would test "Start Playing for Free" vs. your others. It reminds them that its F2P and there's no obligation and it implies they can start right after they sign up (which may or may not be true).
