Hello,

I am considering using one of the Free IP localization database. I see that all "famous" free IP DB are available under Creative Commons Attribution-Share A like license.

My use would just to be have an idea of the countries from where my visitors are coming, without relying on third part software / tool / service.

I know you are not lawyers, but I was wondering about the "Share A Like" for a web site. Does it mean that the "content" of my site has to be shared under the CCA SA license too (the content is not produced using the IP DB data). Or, does it mean that, I need to share the source code of my site CMS?

Sorry if it sounds stupid questions,

IANAL, but I do not think you have to do either.

If you look at sections 3 and 4 of the license: [creativecommons.org...]

it says that you need attribution (and to apply a share alike license to a work incorporating it) if you share the work (i.e. the database).

You might have an issue if you were distributing software embedding the database. Just using it on your own site seems OK as you are not sharing the database.

However, at least one provider seems to have a different interpretation of it and wants an attribution link from any site using the data. This seems to contradict the license itself.

If its just for internal use in your own analytics it probably does not matter - no purpose served by showing the attribution to yourself!

If real money is involved (anywhere) you might want consult a lawyer.

All too often these kind of things change horses in mid-stream and that's no fun.

Aside: I put together a fairly complete db in about 10 days ... then again I was only looking for generalized results at the time and it is not rigorously maintained (I had the basic info I was looking for).

YMMV

Hello-

Right now , I am using my own db, which I am building from public database that the different RIR are providing. However, it looks like lot of AS are then relocating IP ranges as they wish ...
