How to change how Google identifies your business?

That description it puts up when a direct search is done.

When you do a search on a business or a store and google might put up a small box to the right of the search results giving the address, a map, phone, hours of operation, and a one line description, if you've never entered any of that info and google seems to have generated that information from god knows where, how do you go about changing something or correcting a gross error (like the description or address) ? Google has a very wrong description of what our business is, and they have our previous address (which is now 15 years old) despite the fact that google hits our site hundreds of times a day and our pages are full of meta description tags and our contact page is in plain text.

We have a google dashboard (if that's what it's called) setup (rarely rarely every used) - is that maybe where that info can be changed?

there should be a link in the local business listing that looks something like "Own this business?" which will provide choices to verify that you actually own the business listed.
once this happens, essentially you will have a dashboard for your Google My Business [google.com] account so that you can manage edits to the listing.
