GitHub "Sponsors": A New Way to Contribute To Open Source Developers

GitHub has announced "Sponsors" which is a new way to support Open Source Developers.

GitHub Sponsors charges zero platform fees when you support the work of other developers. We’ll also cover payment processing fees for the first 12 months of the program to celebrate the launch. 100% percent of your sponsorship goes to the developer.

I really really support this idea. Many times one of the open source packages I love will be abandoned, some times I pick it up, sometimes I fork it into a private rep for myself but it would be nice for open source devs to have a way to be compensated for some of the time investment they have made.

In fact I really would like to see more community driven platforms to introduce this directly into their systems.

YouTube would really benefit from something like this. Patreon has become a huge platform to fill the gap left, but these platforms and their content creators would be best served if these "take what you need, and pay what you can" type systems were more built right into the platforms to which they apply.
