In a move that which could, eventually, impact on Skype and Hangouts, Slack has said it'll soon start testing video and voice chat.

Slack VP of Product April Underwood tells me that voice chat on desktop will come first, and then the company will focus on making it work on all its devices and apps. Video will have to wait until after that. Underwood noted that you can already make voice calls via Skype’s Slack integration. But with its own feature, she says the use case will be “If I’m DMing someone in Slack and we want to switch to have a quick voice conversation, it addresses that problem.” Slack to Test Video and Voice Chat [techcrunch.com]

I'm not a huge user of video and voice chat, but many are. This could make Slack an even better choice for a collaboration tool for some. However, I don't know of any Slack adopters who were clamoring for this functionality. They seem to be rushing toward providing a service that has every possible bell, whistle, and gadget you could think of. Makes me wonder if this is too much.
