Skype name confusing - EU Ruling

Suprised (but not suprised) at this.

Following on from Sky successfully getting Microsoft to change the name of skydrive to onedrive, Sky now seem as though in the EU to have successfully convinced the courts that Skype's name is confusing and that people will think its something to do with Sky!

Amazing - it's not as though Skype is a brand new service that no one has heard of!

"Silly" is the nice way of putting it. ;)
This makes it look like the EU has a serious bone to pick with Microsoft still.

The case started some time ago, before MS bought Skype I think.

What do you mean the EU has a bone to pick with MS? Do you mean the EU courts, or are you suggesting an anti-MS conspiracy involving the judiciary and the executive?

Ridiculous decision in my opinion but it's another reminder of the who's the boss outside the US. Google got bitch-slapped already by the EU, why not MS?

The real chuckle is that Sky is attempting to copyright a single word of the Language. At some time in the future they will hit that brick wall, where even the most accommodating will have to say enough is enough. :)

Sky has a trademark on the word with regard to certain services. That is allowed - for example Jaguar with regard to cars.

I think the idea that there is an EU wide conspiracy involving judges and regulators is not credible. You have heard of an independent judiciary, and judges are rarely frothing nationalists.

It is ironic that Americans are claiming that this is a biased ruling, when the outstanding biased recent ruling was in Apple vs Samsung. US cases are more likely to be biased in general because the us uses juries for a lot of civil cases, which no one else does.
