So, what's the latest SEO tasklist?

I have been out of of the SEO game for 6-7 years, with most of my 30+ static sites surviving, some thriving with natural traffic. There were ups and downs probably due to penguins or pandas; but I had chosen to ignore them, and all seems more or less normal now.

I still have one or more websites which simply deserve to be better known. My assistant is suggesting the following tasks:

1) Link exchanges

2) Blog comments (of course, manual and relevant only)

3) Forum posts with signature in relevant forums

4) Write and publish unique articles in blogs / article sites, with links to my site.

What is the latest policy on the above? - Isn't it totally passé and useless; and maybe even potentially dangerous?

If so; what else to do to safely promote a website? E.g. how would I go about using social media to promote a simple site?

I will suggest social media, 1,2,3,4 methods may cause spamming issues.

Spend time on quality content & get comments, likes and share on social media for safe promotion of any site.

According to these rules (which could be considered the latest policy): support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66356?hl=en you must concentrate on social media and some blogs that are realy authorithies from your niche.

From forums not use the anchor texts as signature, use some deeplinks URLs instead.

Also, can be tried some articles (quality ones, more than 4-500 words) with nofollow backlink. Some people have different links to different sites from the area, by that the article it is considered an objective opinion and a natural recommendation.

I think outbound links to sites in your subject area are also important.
