I received an email from a Chinese company claiming that another company is attempting to secure my store's name as their trademark and I should contact them. It seems like spam. Their website doesn't load. Is this a well-known spamming method?

Don't fall for that one please. It's many years old. They do this and try to get you to register the domain names with them at inflated rates. Apparently this works because I still get them almost every week.
If you really want the Chinese domains register them yourself. Don't use these spammers. It's a scam.

Like bill said, it is a really an old scam. Try searching google for parts of that email and you will see all sorts of sites mentioning it.
