Suggestions on where to look for investors

I've been developing a plan for a potentially very profitable website for a year. I've done an enormous amount of research as well as tracking of sales in a related niche. I've worked with a consultant from SCORE to refine my business plan, and to write it. I've also been working with an advisor from a venture capital firm in tweaking the plan to make it more appealing to angel investors.

The venture capital advisor is presenting my plan to investors he knows who might be interested. He's also encouraging me to find some on my own, but I've never dealt with this before, and don't even know where to begin to look without getting scammed.

Does anyone have any experience and/or suggestions?

Not from online businesses and not from my own experience, but from technology start-up companies of friends. I suggest not looking for advice in forums, but reach out to contact people directly who have been in similar situations. University towns are good for that; unis often run entrepreneurship centers where contacts are made between potential start-ups and investors and mentoring programs are run. This is particularly good in the English-speaking world. I also know of former management consultants that offer mentoring to young companies for a fee; a friend hired one - with subsidies from a German start-up support program - and was very happy about the service.
