I have 25 sites on various subjects (including travel), but traffic seems to slow down on all of them on the week-ends. Is that a normal pattern? Are there subjects that would draw crowds specifically on week-ends?

Maybe people still go out on a Saturday night or maybe people surf more when they are bored at work.

Think what people do mainly at weekends and concentrate on those subjects for weekend traffic. Sports, diy, cooking, gardening, fishing, soccer, cricket. All those will most likely peak at the weekend. The problem with those subjects is that you need to have a good knowledge about them to rise above the considerable competition.

Interesting. I would have thought that travel was a typical week-end subject - but obviously not! The activities you mention are shorter; makes sense.

Most people do their traveling on the weekend. :)
Weekends are generally slower for most sites, though food and entertainment seem to get a boost.
