best practice for old images

just wondering whats best practice when switching to cdn for 1000's of images. let the old url go 404 or redirect or other? Tx.

I think the old images can just 404, as long as all pages etc get changed to the new cdn path.

You may want to watch logs for any misses

you could also use a rewrite rule for all jpgs but it depends on whether you can get all the pages changed.

I guess it would also depend on wether your business was based on other people using those image urls as well.
