Can anyone recommend a good free or paid server monitoring service. I just want something that will email me when a server is down.
Thanks

Better yet a service that will call a phone number where the server is down.

I use PRTG Network Monitor (free and enterprise versions available). It definitely sends e-mail when a server is down (or any of the other alarms you set). I don't know it it can call a cell phone, but it can certainly send a text message to a cell phone. You can also configure it to run or services. (Not affiliated with the company, but have used their software for many years, both the paid and free versions.)

I use pingdom.com. One website is free, +20 SMS alerts.

I've used websitepulse for years. And get both e-mail and SMS when contact can't be made with server. It's similar to pingdom I believe.
