Why am I getting links like these from vendors?

//cdn.example.com/

... sans http/https. Is this something from HTML 5? All the cool kids just doin' it cuz it works? I did search around and spent some time in the HTML 5 spec but didn't see any info relating to the new httpless URL style.

These sites link to you, and allow the visitor to use the same protocol as the user was using on their site.

I've just never seen it before in all my years, was there a change, a spec somewhere I missed, what's it's definition?

Protocol-relative URLs have been around since RFC 1808 [ietf.org]. Kinda surprised you haven't seen them before.

Thank you, just what I was looking for. I just recently began seeing a lot of requests in this format (add this link, include the JS with this code) and thought it was something new. Must have slipped past in html 2.0 . . . or maybe just one of those things I forgot. :-(
