how best to make menu managing easier?

I am new-ish to using this site. I don't know if I am posting to the right place.

Is there a convenient way to manage the navigation updating on sites? I'm overhauling a site (having been away from regular web work for a bit) and it would sure be nice to be able to update the menu in one place and have it change throughout the site. Is that possible?

I hand code but I'd sell out briefly to a widget that allowed me to do this.

Static html pages: use an SSI include.



Normally this requires the files be named with an .shtml extension, but if it's Apache, you can tell the server to parse .htm/.html with a directive in .htaccess:

AddHandler server-parsed .html

Many will suggest using php includes here, which is an option, but it requires either renaming all files as .php or doing the same thing as above, telling the server to parse .html files as PHP. IMO PHP is a robust scripting language and this is overkill for the simple task of file inclusion only, this is what SSI is for.

Windows servers have similar functions but don't recall how to implement them ATM. :-)
