Maximum Number of Words Per Page

I have tutorials that range from 1500 to 4500 words. I really don't want to break them into separate pages but I also don't want to hurt SEO by the pages being to long.

I'm only targeting a few keyword phrases per tutorial but am hoping to get a lot of natural longtail traffic from each one. What's the maximum number of words I can use per page and still be OK?

As many as required.

Or tick off a few folks and make it 500 words in multiple pages which they will not click through to the end.

Some of my "short" articles are 25,000-85,000 words long.

More pages, more adsense, of course... Pick yer poison and go from there.
