Hello

In my google.com/webmasters -> Dashboard -> Not found , I found about 180 pages with 404. These pages are old files which has been removed by me from the server over last 2 years period and all of these pages have links from another pages [external site/internal pages] which also does not exist any more.

Does any one know what should I do get this removed from Google?

Thank you

Google is pretty slow to remove dead links from GWT if these are pages which are not spidered frequently. I am still seeing a group of URLs popping up which have been removed months ago. Sometimes they disappear from the 404 list and sometimes they reappear as if Google used an old data set to recalculate the link graph again.

It is not something to worry about as it happens with many sites where internal linking structure has been changed. I you really want to delete them from the GWT 404 error list, you could try to remove them with the URL removal tool in GWT at Site configuration->Crawler access->Remove URL.

i would suggest trying a 410 Gone [w3.org] status code response.
