So I have a friend who is having a web app programmed, to be hosted on a VPS server with a plesk panel. I registered the domains for him and am trying to point the domains to the server. The hosting company tells us that Plesk generates the nameservers (NSs) for the sites (I've not seen this before).

Okay, I log in to Plesk and see that the NSs are ns1.domain.com, ns2.domain.com. Is this not a recursion problem?

It makes no sense to enter ns1.domain.com for domain.com and in our domain control panel there are no possibilities for entering an IP address with the nameserver like:

ns.domain.com 82.123.456.789

Which is the only thing I can think of. So I'm stuck telling it to set the nameservers for domain.com to ns1.domain.com, ns2.domain.com which does not work.

Any ideas?

I don't use Plesk so I'm not sure how much help I can be. Have you read the Plesk manual for what you're trying to accomplish?

If you want to run your own nameservers you need at least 3 IP addresses...

ns1.domain.com = IP address #1
ns2.domain.com = IP address #2
domain.com = IP address #3

You also need to register the nameservers at the domain registrar (not the same as registering a domain name). This should be a free service with instructions at your domain registrar. You can only register nameservers for domains that you own.

I'm familiar with how to set up nameservers and the like, the trouble I think in this case is the domain registrar does not allow me to input an IP along with the nameserver value. So I end up having the nameserver set to ns1.mydomain.com + ns2.mydomain.com for mydomain.com.

Telling it to look up where mydomain.com is by going to ns1.mydomain.com or ns2.mydomain.com is not going to work.

The solution, I think, is to have a registrar that allows me to enter IPs with the nameserver values.

I just wish someone around here could confirm this!
