Called Flattr, the micropayments system revolves around members paying a fixed monthly fee.

At the end of each month that cash will be divided among participating sites a Flattr member wants to reward.

Members might want to reward a band that made a track they liked, the author of a story they enjoyed or a site that gave useful advice.

here's the site:

The main problem I see is that folks like free. How many of us are going to deposit $25 into some account to give away as I browse the web?

There is going to be a huge learning curve just to get users to understand the system. And who will teach them? They see a flattr button and click it and next thing you know they are being asked to deposit money and register at some 3rd party site. That is not going to work.

It is also the classic chicken or egg problem. Say you sign up and deposit money. There is no one to give it to? Say you put the code on your site, well there is no one to donate. The system needs broad adoption to succeed. And that will take time. Time it probably doesn't have.
