Blog Indexing problem

I have read the FAQs and checked for similar issues: YES / NO
My site's URL is: http://www.example.com/blog/
Description (including timeline of any changes made):
For some reason, only 28 of over 500 blog pages are being indexed. It is a long-established Wordpress blog. The sitemap is current and error free. It was updated yesterday, and downloaded today.This just happened out of the clear blue. No major changes have been made. The blog used to be well indexed. The text in the blogs is all original content. There are no "noindex" meta tags.
The pages on the root sitemap are well indexed. It appears that only the pages in the /blog folder and above are being ignored.

- Are the pages being crawled by the search engines, or just the sitemap?
- Is your version of WordPress up to date? Have you validated your robots.txt?
- Are there any messages in Google Webmaster Tools?
- Have the pages completely disappeared from the results when you do a search for your specific domain?
- Do you have many (or any) backlinks to pages in the /blog/ subdirectory?

Were all the pages in the index before and now are not? Or have they always not been in the index?
