Simple Mailing List For a Splash Screen

Any mailing list options people can recommend?

Hey everyone. Have a new company that I am helping out, going to be setting up email, website, etc.

Background:
I'll be hosting the site myself (I run the LAMP servers and can install anything I want on them), and probably using Google Apps for email, collaboration, etc.

So, for now, they'd like a simple slash screen with a bit of text and an input form where people can submit their email and be alerted about updates, launch, etc.

Solutions?:
So, I see these types of things all over the place, and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions or solutions they can recommend. Roll my own via PHP? PHPList? Commercial solution? We need to be getting this out the door asap and I would like to avoid re-inventing the wheel and/or wrestling with PHPList if I can avoid it.

Thanks for any advice!

there are lots of hosted commercial solutions for building mailing lists. They are usually double opt in and the only one that I have tried had a regular issue over some service providers regarding the opt in messages as spam.

My mailing list was only a couple of hundred names and I maintained it manually in the end but I did learn that you need to test it from multiple service providers including Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail and AOL.

Thanks for the input piatkow. Anyone else have a positive experience with a provider and/or have suggestions?

Bumping to see if anyone has any other suggestions/recommendations for an easy to use, relatively cheap mail list service that I can plug into the splash page of my new clients site.

Thanks everyone,

Paul
