Why everyone follows twitter

surprised today to read an email from industry giants following them?

I have ready numerous articles and comments on this site, for twitter ADVANTAGES and also a few negative beliverrs/DISADVANTAGES.

But as a webmaster I have few questions.

1. Why shouuld I follow twitter ?
(What kind of sites, what niche, and how does a site gets benefit from twitter).

2. Can twittering get negative effects in future
(like all primitive methods of business(s) or profit in any kind)

1. Because everybody else is. ;)
If your competition is there it's good to see what they're up to. It's also a great way to catch breaking news and events in areas that you monitor. It can also be a great way to engage your customers.

2. Sure.
If you write something bad on Twitter it will come back to haunt you just the same way it would if you wrote it on your website.

Love or hate twitter, you cannot ignore them. People are having discussions about your brand/product/niche/service on twitter whether you like it or not and it pays for you to pay attention.

You wouldn't ignore something said about you on a blog would you?

Luckily, they make it very easy for you to follow important topics through RSS. You do not need to register or "tweet" to follow what is going on. You can use this url for a RSS feed of any twitter search:

http://search.twitter.com/search.atom?q=blue widgets

To get started, I recommend you track your brand names, your top products and the top terms you would track in google. That will give you an idea of how people are talking about things important to you.

You can decide to join the conversation or not later.

Blogs and news sites probably do best from a Twitter traffic standpoing. Ecommerce sites are less likely to get many Twitter links unless they have really unusual or novel items.

All sites, though, can benefit from buzz monitoring and gentle community building.

I use to agree with this statement. Until I searched for my brand. 25 results. 2 were legit, but were simply mentions. 23 were some kind of weird spam that was posting automated tweets with links to my pages that would really redirect to some spam...

just because of traffic twitter is considered ? (unknown if those are legit or spam links)
atleast digg.com was 1000 times better for targetted visitors

Twitter? What is that? (joking)

Media seems to be twitterized these days. There are a few (millions?) who twit, but do those twits give us biz? Only way to know is to twit... and I don't. Webmaster answer to OP's query.

Life is too short to worry about fads which have not yet become mainstream.
