I know that this has been asked before, but I wanted to get some new input.
I have an existing domain, let's call it siteA.com being hosted under my current plan. On the same host, I would like to create a "minisite" with its own seperate domain name, called siteB.com. I've already purchased the domain name for siteB.com.
Is there a way to run both sites off a single hosting plan? I really can't justify purchasing a completely seperate plan as this minisite will not use much space or bandwidth.
My current site is hosted on an Apache server. I actually put the entire site into its own seperate directory under the public_html directory. I then use mod_rewrite rules to pull from that directory. Now I believe I can do the same for siteB, but the one area I keep getting hung up on is the need for an 'addon domain'. I'm looking in cPanel and no where can I see 'addon domain'. I see an option for a subdomain, but this isn't what I want. So without the option for an 'addon domain' or alias or whatever you'd call it, am I out of luck for being about to have two completely seperate sites on this host with seperate domain names?
Thanks in advance!
If they say you have to buy another plan, shop around- there should be lots of other companies that should be willing to do multiple domains under one plan. (Then again, we have our own servers and I haven't looked at hosting plans in years.)
One was being run for a community organisation that I am no longer involved with and finally I decided to hand over to a new webmaster. Splitting the accounts was quite an "entertaining" experience.
1. Split accounts - web host had an option for that
2. check accounts - all sites are visible through both accounts - raise support ticket
3. Turns out sites are hosted on an old server that doesn't support account splitting and need to be moved. This will involve a few hours down time. Raise ticket to request this.
4. Raise ticket to request removal of card details from account that I am handing over.
5. Account that I am keeping looks OK. Make changes to remove any references to site that is going
6. Other site is still offline - assume slow DNS propagation and wait until next day
7. Site shows host's default 404 page - attempt to connect to see what is there. FTP account tries to connect to old server - raise support ticket
8. Fixed but site is totally lost - upload from backup.
Total down time - 3 days.
Moral - host on one account only if you are NEVER going to split the management of the sites in any way.
If would have been a lot easier of course if the domain names hadn't been managed by through the same account.
