I am considering putting together a new site that would eventually host a lot of information on a very general term that has many topics. Would I be better off building it under one domain, or should I use subdomains, or should I build mutliple "mini" sites and link to from the main domain?

I am just not sure how to go about this from an SEO stand point. Maybe it doesn't matter, I just don't know.

Thanks

Depends. If you see the various topics taking off in different directions from a functionality perspective, that is certainly one argument to break them apart into separate sites.

On the other hand, keeping it all together helps build up a single large site, which can have advantages as well such as ease of maintenance, more frequently updated content, perhaps build up trust faster, etc.

It would be difficult to say at this point with just the general information you provided. I think I would start out with them all combined... see how it goes and break them off as/if needed.

As a visitor I would benefit most if all of your stuff was on one site and well laid out.

Both of you had very good points. I like the idea of one site but wasn't sure. As you say I can break it apart later.

thanks

I'd suggest both ways with the one combined first. That'd allow you to see yourself how it goes. Just remember not to cross-link them.

Makes sense, so if i do build multiple sites I should link only from and to the main site but not each site to each site. Okay.

I'd not link the websites at all, promoting them separately. As if I'd come to the main site and I liked it, I'd never think of having a bookmark to a copy of the section as a separate website.

Google might catch the links and think that's a promotion scheme.

If there's a reason to make the links, I'd make them nofollow.
