Is double-opt in really that effective?

Against spammers

Reason I ask is because I was running a list on a server using a double-opt in system, and there were plenty of spammy subscribers that somehow got past it

How?

Do you find double-opt in works? I have different software now; i'm wondering if it will make any difference

it works for me and have no problems with bogus addresses.
I use a script provided by my hosting company that requires the subscriber to click through from the confirmation email, then mark a checkbox and press a confirm button.
Probably overkill when compared to the solutions normaly offered where clicking on a link in an email is enough. But it pays for me as I have very good subscriber quality.

A human SPAMMER can always manually follow the double opt-in procedure. But the issue is that 99.99% of SPAMMERS aren't going to waste their time/energy to do that.
