How to find a good hosting company?

I've been with my current hosting company for about five years. However, the owner is making some demands on me that are unreasonable. So, it's time to move.

I've done a search for "good hosting companies," but I get the feeling that the review sites I came across were little more than paid advertising for the featured hosting companies.

Without violating webmasterworld.com's terms of service, can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks for any replies.

There's a hosting forum here for subscribers. Beyond that the best I can say is pick one of the top 3 largest hosting companies. And if hosts are giving you too much trouble then just get a dedicated (or co-located) server! You can get them for pretty cheap and then you can be your own 'host' (though you still have to deal with the company who owns the server...).

As physics said, going for a big firm is a good move. As regards dedicated, I gave up on shared hosting a long time ago and have never looked back. Hosting is one of the most important parts of a website and it is certainly not a place to cut costs. You can have the greatest site in the world but it will never take off if your host isn't up-to-scratch.

On a related topic - if you notice that your host isn't patching and upgrading promptly - dump them. For example, if you find a host with PHP running with register_globals = on, dump them. Some hosts avoid upgrading due to fear of upsetting customers - never use that kind of host.

i think first you should know exactly what kind of hosting you need, with the search "good hosting companies" is quite difficul to find something good... :P
