I'm about to put a new website online. I want to include a search engine on my web site to allow my visitors to search for content available throughout the site. I was thinking about doing it by including a Google custom search engine.
I wonder whether the pages have to be indexed by Google before you can search through them using Google's custom search. Knowing that it might take a while before the site is indexed by Google.

Also I was wondering whether the Google Mini does the same job? Knowing that I only want to search through the content that's part of the public pages. I'm trying to avoid having to build the search engine myself.

Thank you for your help.

Google Mini will do what you want, but it is probably going to be fairly expensive as solutions go.

Yes I think that Google Mini is an expensive solution I thought Google custom search would be a cheaper alternative.

Hiya

You're quite right - the google site search as far as I know will only search your pages that are already in it's index, we investigated this recently at work and discarded it for this purpose.

And VinceVinceVince is correct about the price of the Google Mini/Search Appliance. I recently went to a Google Enterprise conference, and the Search Appliance is a device to sit in a network rack and index your intranet/documents, and is ideally for from 50,000 pages and upwards. In UKP, it costs around £5,000, I don't know US prices but it probably works out a little cheaper :)

Thank you guys. I have to say that I don't need to search any documents on my intranet just pages that are already visible on the internet. I guess I have to find another alternative.
