The discussions I found on webmasterworld on this issue are quite old. Can someone give me an idea how the email service providers (AOL, Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail) view this. Does AOL accept HTML emails now?

Keep it as simple as possible,
I just made a mailer; my experience: Use simple coding some <br /> and <b> and other simple one such as <h1> etc..
Use simple table avoid nested (for mail delivery consistency it seems that table works better than full CSS)
Do not over do it with img and use only full path.
Not only ask for opt-in opt-out but also (IMPORTANT) ask if your user wants HTML or plain text, have two versions and send accordingly
Testing: find friends using AOL and other ones

Remember that a lot of people will block images so don't make them critical to your content.

Personally I stick to plain text.
